Introduction to caffeine
Homeostasis is the process where the body attempts to maintain a state of stable physiological balance. The body needs to maintain homeostasis in order to stay alive. However there are many factors that can disrupt this balance. One of the major classes of disruptions are called stimulants. Stimulants are described as psychoactive drugs that induce temporary improvements in either mental or physical functions (Charles, 2014) . There are many different kinds of stimulants, the most popular kinds are known as tobacco, crack , and cocaine. One of the most known stimulants used by billions around the world is caffeine. Caffeine is a drug that is naturally produced in the leaves and seeds of many plants. It is also produced artificially and added to certain foods. Caffeine is defined as a drug because it stimulates the central nervous system , causing increased alertness. Caffeine gives most people a temporary energy boost and elevated mood.The most well known source of of caffeine is the seed of the coffee Arabica plant. (CAMH, n.d)
